Journal-World to include USA Today in daily editions
On March 16, The World Company will begin including a USA Today Local Edition in every copy of the Lawrence Journal-World.
The USA Today Local Edition is a six-page to eight-page section that includes national and world news as well as business and lifestyle content. Pages of the Local Edition are taken directly from USA Today’s well-known News, Money and Life sections. The Journal-World also will include USA Today sports pages as appropriate in its award-winning local sports section.
The USA Today Local Edition will be published with the Journal-World every day, including Saturday and Sunday. The USA Today content will be in addition to the local news, sports and feature stories for which the Journal-World is known. The addition of USA Today will allow the newspaper to focus on increasing local content, according to Dolph Simons III, president of the Newspapers Division for The World Company, and Dan Simons, president of the Digital Division.
“The concept is more and better,” Dolph Simons III said. “We deliberately emphasize local, but we get feedback our readers want more content in their Journal-World, especially more national and world news. The USA Today Local Edition gives us the opportunity to address those concerns, while continuing to focus our staff efforts on providing thorough coverage of local issues from City Hall to Kansas University to Topeka.”
Gannett Company Inc., which owns and operates USA Today and 81 other daily newspapers in the U.S., began inserting USA Today Local Editions in 35 of its company-owned newspapers in 2014. The editions were successful enough that Gannett recently expanded the program to non-Gannett newspapers such as the Colorado Springs Gazette and the Knoxville News-Sentinel.
The Journal-World, which printed a regional edition of USA Today from 1984 until January of 2014, is the first newspaper in Kansas to participate in the USA Today program. The newspaper will include the USA Today Local Editions in its daily green editions at LJWorld.com.
“USA Today and the Journal-World have a long history of partnership and innovation,” said Dan Simons, president of the Digital Division of The World Company. “It makes sense that we work together on this initiative to bring more content to readers of the Journal-World.”
Readers interested in subscribing to the Journal-World should visit ljworld.com/subscribe/ or call 785-843-1000. As part of the USA Today promotion, new subscribers can get daily delivery of the Journal-World for three months for just $17.75 plus tax.
