Westbrook is one of 565 students to make it to the semifinals. Out of nearly 3.3 million graduating high school seniors, 4,300 were identified as candidates in the program. Up to 141 students are named a U.S. Presidential Scholar every year, according to a news release.

The program, which is run by the U.S. Department of Education, was established in 1964 to recognize some of the country’s most distinguished high school seniors. All scholars are honored for their accomplishment at the White House in Washington, D.C., where they receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion.

Westbrook was the top winner in the Journal-World’s recent Academic All-Star competition.
