Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews contained a fire at an apartment building at 1224 Ohio St. Wednesday and remained on the scene as of 5 p.m. attempting to discover the cause of the fire.

When crews arrived just before noon Wednesday, large flames were visible on the alley side of the building between Ohio and Tennessee streets. At 12:25 p.m., crews called for a second alarm.

Dispatch reported an all clear at 1:10 p.m., but the building — three stories with six apartments — suffered extensive damage and continued to smolder.

All residents of the building were accounted for and unharmed early Wednesday evening, Division Chief Shaun Coffey said .

Resident Isaiah Mazurek was baby-sitting at a friend’s house when he saw a picture on Twitter of his apartment in flames. He feared for his terrier, Potato, who was in a kennel inside.

Mazurek called his friend to pick up the child so he could get to his apartment and asked a Journal-World reporter to tell firefighters about the dog trapped inside.

When Mazurek arrived his apartment was in flames but firefighters had been able to rescue Potato. The two reunited inside a first-responder vehicle about a block away.

“I wonder how badly my stuff is burned. All that stuff is really replaceable, though,” Mazurek said. “I’m not a wealthy person, so it will take me a long time to do so, but the only thing that isn’t replaceable is OK.”

Each apartment unit sustained fire and smoke damage, Coffey said. The first and second floors appeared charred.

Twenty-six fire medical responders helped with the fire, Coffey said.
