Letter: KU Senate sunshine
November 23, 2013
Ben Unglesbee’s Nov. 16 article on Kansas University Senate secrecy missed several points. The American Association of University Professors petition signed by 150-plus KU faculty members in April called for KU’s governance and administration to simply observe the letter and spirit of the sunshine laws of the state of Kansas. Because neither unit believes in sunshine-level transparency and its associated public accountability, secret-ballot voting and unrecorded closed-door meetings are deemed acceptable. Some are concerned that if the public knew what decisions were being made and by whom, there would be a nontrivial public outcry.
