Free State High School will get a new assistant principal next year.
Keith Jones, who is currently an administrative intern and freshman administrator at Blue Valley Northwest High School, will start his new job at Free State effective July 1, pending approval by the Lawrence school board.
District spokeswoman Julie Boyle said the job is a new position at Free State. It combines one half of a full-time position allocated to the school for staffing and one half of a full-time position from the district's pool of learning coaches.
Jones previously taught journalism and served as department chairman at Schlagle High School in Kansas City, Kan. He also coached basketball at both the middle and high school levels.
He has a bachelor's degree from Florida A&M University and two master's degrees from the Overland Park campus of Pittsburg State University.
"I am excited about joining the Firebird family," Jones said in a statement released to the news media. "Lawrence Free State has a rich tradition and history for academic excellence."
Other members of the Free State administration team include Principal Ed West, Associate Principal Steve Heffernan, Assistant Principal/Athletics Director Mike Hill and Assistant Principal Lisa Boyd.
