Liberty Hall to screen Lawrence native’s award-winning ‘Story of Luke’

Liberty Hall is presenting a one-time screening of Lawrence native Alonso Mayo’s debut feature film, “The Story of Luke.”

Starring Lou Taylor Pucci, Seth Green, Cary Elwes and Kristin Bauer, the film is a comedy about a young man with autism who embarks on a quest for a job, and a girlfriend. The story is based on writer/director Mayo’s experiences at Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú, as seen in his research documentary “Just Like Anyone.”

Mayo’s mother, Yolanda Mayo-Ortega, a Kansas University graduate known for her work in Peru, will introduce the film before the screening, set for 7 p.m. Friday at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St.

“Story of Luke” has been named Best Film at the Irvine International, San Diego and other film festivals, and won audience awards at festivals including Fort Lauderdale and Bahamas International.
