Man found naked on highway, charged in connection with missing vehicle

A 22-year old Shawnee man found naked Friday night on U.S. Highway 24 has been charged in Douglas County District Court with aggravated kidnapping, robbery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and theft.

Ivory Leland Hardin was arrested about 11 p.m. Friday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, hours after police began to seek him in connection with a stolen vehicle and an incident at an apartment in the 900 block of Indiana Street, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman.

Police responded to a disturbance at that home about 8:40 a.m. Friday, when residents reported the theft of a maroon 2009 Chevy Trailblazer. The residents told police they had been battered in the course of an argument and that the Trailblazer was missing. Police notified surrounding law enforcement that they were searching for Hardin and the vehicle.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies encountered Hardin late Friday night, walking naked along U.S. 24 west of Perry, and took him into custody, McKinley said.

Officers who spoke with Hardin were not able to understand how he arrived at that location without his clothes, and the vehicle remained missing Monday, McKinley said.

“He was exhibiting some odd behavior,” McKinley said. “It seems like something had gone wrong.”

Hardin was transported to Lawrence Memorial as a precaution against exposure to the cold and arrested by Lawrence police after he had been treated. He remained in jail Monday with bond set at $75,000.
