The Lied Center on Saturday announced its 20th anniversary season lineup, featuring an array of performers from acrobats to award-winning concert pianists, some new and some returning to Lawrence.

Executive director Tim Van Leer said the variety reflects one of the Lied’s most important traits — there’s something for everybody.

“People have made the Lied Center what it is today by making it a part of their lives,” Van Leer said. “Think about what this community would be without the Lied Center — or wouldn’t be. And it’s because there’s so many different kinds of things that go on here.”

Some familiar performers returning this year are the Turtle Island Quartet, Hal Holbrook in “Mark Twain Tonight!,” Lawrence-native Karole Armitage’s dance company performing “Fables on Global Warming” and AnDa Union, a Mongolian musical group.

The Blue Man Group will be performing as part of the Lied Center’s 2013-14 season. The performance group is scheduled to perform two shows, on Sept. 16 and 17.

AnDa Union will perform tonight at the Lied Center. AnDa Union combine different traditions and styles of music from all over Mongolia.

“Memphis,” the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, is coming to the Lied Center on Nov. 14.

This year’s Broadway series features several big shows appearing for the first time in Lawrence, including the Blue Man Group, “Memphis” and “The Addams Family.”

One of the new shows is even interactive.

“Broadway’s Next H!t Musical” features improv musician-comedians who take audience ideas, create original songs and, after an audience vote, expand the winning song into an impromptu musical, complete with storyline and quickly drummed-up costumes.

“It’s funny, it’s unique, and it’s all done live in front of you,” Van Leer said. “I saw it in New York and thought, we just have to do this.”

Tickets go on sale Monday to Friends of the Lied, renewal ticket package subscribers and KU students. Tickets go on sale for the public May 20 for season tickets and June 10 for single tickets.
