Police seeking suspects in robbery of Mi Tiendita grocery store

Police are looking for three men who robbed a Lawrence store Wednesday and assaulted a clerk with pepper spray.

The Mi Tiendita grocery store, 3022 Iowa Street, is open after an armed robbery Wednesday evening. The store was robbed of cash at knife point, and police were still seeking suspects Thursday.

Three men entered the Latino grocery store Mi Tiendita, 3022 Iowa Street, about 7 p.m. Wednesday and threatened the clerk with a knife, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. The robbers took cash from the store, and one of them sprayed the clerk with pepper spray before the three fled.

The store clerk, Maria Soria, said the pepper spray attack was painful, but she was on duty again Thursday. She said one of the robbers also threatened her with a screwdriver, and described the three as being of about average height. One was skinny, she said, and the other two more stocky.

Police describe the suspects as three black men, in their late teens or mid-20s, with dreadlocks. The Lawrence Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the robbery, and Lawrence police detectives are investigating, McKinley said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lawrence Police Department at 785-832-7509 or CrimeStoppers at 843-TIPS (8477). CrimeStoppers will accept information from anonymous callers and is offering an award of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
