A man talks to police after a shooting on May 6, 2024, that left a dog dead and a woman injured after the woman's dog allegedly attacked the man and his dog in the 700 block of Ash Street in North Lawrence.

A woman who was shot in the leg and whose dog was fatally shot on Monday is now out of the hospital, police say, and she provided them with more information about the dog and the events that led up to the shooting.

The shooting happened around noon Monday in the 700 block of Ash Street in North Lawrence. Police previously said a man was walking his dog in the area when another dog that had gotten loose attacked him and his dog. The man stopped the attack by shooting the attacking dog and killing it, police said, but he also struck the woman, who was trying to restrain her loose dog. The woman was hit in the upper leg and was taken to an area trauma center.

On Tuesday, the Lawrence Police Department posted an update on social media saying that the woman had been released from the hospital and was recovering from her injuries.

The post also said the woman told police that just before the shooting, she was at her residence and was letting the dog out back when it escaped. She said she ran after it immediately.

The woman told police she adopted the dog from a Kansas City-area shelter and that it was described by the shelter as a pit mix, according to the post.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing; the post said that when investigators conclude their final interviews and paperwork, they will discuss the facts of the case with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.
