Man gets probation for vehicular assault

A 23-year-old Leavenworth man was sentenced to two years of probation after using his vehicle as a weapon outside a Lawrence bar on Oct. 9.

Mardo W. Johnson Jr., as part of a plea agreement, previously pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Johnson was initially charged last October with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of criminally discharging a firearm after the incident in the parking lot of the former Taste Lounge, Bar and Grill, 804 W. 24th St. Police and prosecutors initially alleged he fired shots during the incident.

Prosecutors alleged Johnson drove directly at two people as he left the parking lot.

Johnson was eligible for probation because of a limited criminal history.

A co-defendant, Spencer S. Hildebrandt, also of Leavenworth, who faced an obstruction charge in the case, has applied for diversion.
