Police are searching for a 23-year-old man after he fled during a traffic stop.

Lawrence police Sgt. Craig Shanks said a police officer pulled over a white 1993 Honda Accord for an illegal license plate violation at 8:02 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of Tennessee Street.

Shanks said the driver, Kyle Anthony Waymon Mendez, handed the police officer his ID and drove away from the scene at a high rate of speed while the officer was checking the ID.

Police discontinued the chase at the corner of Ninth and Tennessee streets after the driver nearly collided with another vehicle.

Shanks said Mendez has a warrant out for his arrest in Lyon County.

Shanks asked anyone who knows the whereabouts of Mendez, a 5-foot-10-inch white male, weighing about 145 pounds, or anyone who has seen the vehicle to please call 911.

Saw it happen. He pulled in among the pulled over and parked cars just past the 9th street light on Tennessee. Don't know why LPD didn't follow. They stopped at the traffic light.

they should've followed, didn't because of fear of lawyers.

Finally!!! Cops not creating a high speed chase through the streets. They know his name, they can find him.

Unless a suspect is committing a violent crime, it's really pathetic to see police not only chase a suspect, usually at great speeds, they often deploy other officers and sometimes use helicopters on the chase. What a waste of resources!

He was pulled over for a plate violation? Not really a big deal.

Why chase a guy through the student ghetto putting lives at risk? If someone had been run over the same people criticizing the police for not chasing the guy would be up in arms over the fact that they had pursued him.

I applaud the LPD for making the right decision.
