Firefighters set damage to home at $75,000 in Saturday morning blaze

Fire investigators have determined a fire early Saturday caused $75,000 worth of damage to a home at 1730 Lake Alvamar Drive.

“The dwelling was occupied at the time of the fire,” said Chief Mark Bradford of Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical. “It is important to note that the occupants were awakened by smoke alarms, and the ability to vacate and quickly notify the fire department resulted in no civilian injuries and reduced property damage.”

Bradford said investigators determined the fire was an accident caused by landscape mulch covering an in-ground lighting source. The fire extended to inside the house. When fire crews arrived at 4:08 a.m., they found the fire in an interior utility and storage area on the home’s lower level. Bradford said the fire was under control at 5 a.m. Saturday.

According to Douglas County records, the property is appraised at $725,000.
