Watkins Community Museum to open exhibit on basketball

Fans will have a chance to bone up on a little bit of basketball history prior to this weekend’s Final Four action.

The Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass., will open a new exhibit at 6 p.m. Friday called “More than a Game: Basketball and Community Spirit.” The opening reception will include refreshments, games and a drawing for a basketball autographed by the KU men’s basketball team. The drawing is open to anyone who joins or renews their membership in the Douglas County Historical Society.

The exhibit will feature several pieces of memorabilia from the early days of the game, including a pair of Spalding Guides — an early day publication– that were signed by James Naismith and Phog Allen. The museum also will display many of its photos from basketball-related events in Lawrence.

“The exhibit is designed to look at how basketball impacts the community and the connections that it helps us make,” said Steve Nowak, executive director of the museum.
