West Middle School 8th-grader wins regional spelling bee

Two Lawrence middle-schoolers spelled their way to v-i-c-t-o-r-y in the Topeka Capital-Journal Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday.

Emma Steimle, an eighth-grader at West Middle School, won first place in the competition of nearly 50 students from 24 Kansas counties. She’ll represent the Capital-Journal in the national Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May, according to a media release from the paper.

Milo Schoenen, a sixth-grader at Southwest Middle School, won third place.
