Fox takes Latin turn
Fox yanks “COPS” from its long-held Saturday perch to air “Q’Viva! The Chosen” (7 p.m.), a talent-search contest produced by Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. Along with choreographer Jamie King, the apparently amicably broken-up tandem will scour more than 20 Latin American countries to find the most exciting, authentic talents to recruit for a Las Vegas production. Because nothing says authentic like Las Vegas.
”Q’Viva!” has been airing on the Spanish-language Univision network since late January. Broadcasters should be paying attention to this show. And not just to see the winner. How many English-speaking American viewers will embrace this show? How many Spanish-speaking Americans will watch it in English? Broadcasters have been trying to attract this crossover demographic for years with shows like ABC’s Americanized “Ugly Betty,” CBS’ “Rob” and Sofia Vergara’s voluptuous telenovela-style character on “Modern Family” on ABC.
The success of “Q’Viva!” could also go a long way toward integrating Latin music into the pop mainstream. One of the curious things that struck me about the recent and wildly popular Grammy Awards was the complete absence of Latin music and culture. Why is there a separate Latin Grammy Awards?
• Filled with grim characters, criminal acts and grainy re-enactment footage, “Deadly Sins” (8 p.m., ID) joins the true-crime genre with one notable hook: Every episode is organized around one of the seven deadly sins.
The series kicks off with the tale of a handsome Marine whose gluttony for sex threatens his marriage, his relationship with the Corps and even his life. One quibble: this “Sins” installment never explains the difference between “gluttony” for sex and old-fashioned “lust.”
• Eager for “Mad Men” to return at the end of March? Take some solace in “We’ll Take Manhattan” (9 p.m., Ovation). The original 2012 film, seen recently on British television, recreates the fashion scene of the early 1960s and concentrates on a 1962 fashion shoot that kindled an affair between photographer David Bailey (Aneurin Barnard) and model Jean Shrimpton (Karen Gillan).
Tonight’s other highlights
• Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter in director Tim Burton’s adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland” (7:30 p.m., ABC Family).
• “20/20” (8 p.m., ABC) looks at secret addictions.
• Lindsay Lohan hosts “Saturday Night Live” (10:30 p.m., NBC), with musical guest Jack White.
