Don’t worry about where to park: City bus system is offering free rides Thursday for annual Downtown Lawrence Sidewalk Sale

July 17, 2012

Even transportation is getting marked down Thursday for the annual Downtown Lawrence Sidewalk Sale.

The Lawrence Transit System is waiving bus fares on all fixed routes for the sale — Routes 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 10 and 11 all travel downtown. The T has regular service from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Besides a free ride, taking the bus means you don’t have to face traffic congestion or worry about parking, transit administrator Robert Nugent said in a prepared announcement.

“The Sidewalk Sale is a great time to try the T,” he said. “On a day that brings so many people downtown, riding the bus can be a real convenience.”

To see routes and schedules, visit For help planning a route, call 785-864-4644. Bus drivers can help with transfers and explain timing points.

The sale runs from sunup to sundown, with some downtown shops planning to open as early as 5 a.m.

To prepare a shopping plan, check out, where Downtown Lawrence Inc. has been posting sale updates and preceding deals from various stores. A Facebook page set up just for the sale,, also has information.

Throughout the day Thursday, Journal-World staffers will be Tweeting and blogging from the sale. Tune in at

People like to hate on the buses but then they go and do nice things like this for us and its hard to keep hating on them.

I love the city bus! I use it almost every day. I've lived in small towns before even some larger than Lawrence and none of them had a bus system. I am very thankful for the Lawrence T and I simply love using it.

And they will count the riders when they toot their own horn about increasing ridership on the M-T.
