Ottawa man pleads no contest in battery charge

A 24-year-old Ottawa man pleaded no contest Friday to a simple battery charge in connection with a Jan. 11 incident in which another man was injured at a party in the 1100 block of Mississippi Street.

Joshua Jeffcoat initially faced charges of aggravated battery and theft because he was also accused of stealing a vehicle from a convenience store and driving to Ottawa after injuring the man early that morning.

Jeffcoat’s attorney, John Kerns, said Friday that as part of the plea agreement his client faces six months on probation in the case and six more month on probation for a no-contest plea in a separate 2011 domestic battery plea.

Prosecutors are also asking Jeffcoat be sentenced to serve five days in jail, but he’s already served 16 days as of Friday. His sentencing is Thursday.
