Band looks for help to celebrate Pi Day

Their Tax Day celebration may now be a thing of the past, but the Alferd Packer Memorial String Band has found “another esoteric holiday to celebrate.”

Member Steve Mason said the group, which was featured last year in The New York Times for its tradition of playing in the downtown post office during final tax filings, is this year instead looking for contributors for a celebration of Pi Day.

Pi Day is March 14 (the number rounded to two decimal points is 3.14) and will replace the group’s tax day playing because shorter hours this year meant it “just wasn’t the same,” Mason said. The celebration at 7 p.m. at Theater Lawrence, 1501 N.H., will feature the band, the skits and, of course, lots of pies.

Mason said the group is looking for people to perform short (they want people on and off stage in 5 minutes or less — 3 minutes and 14 seconds would be great), entertaining science- or math-related skits.
