Immediate needs

• The City of Lawrence and Douglas County Senior Services are still looking for volunteers to sign up for the annual Safe Winter Walkways program, which helps Lawrence residents who are unable to remove snow from their walkways, including public sidewalks in front of their homes. The area’s first snowfall of the season serves as a reminder that several volunteers are still needed. Volunteers get matched to someone in need and commit to visiting his or her residence after each significant snowfall (at least 2 inches) and shovel for them. If you’re interested in helping fellow community members ensure their walkways remain safe throughout the winter, please call 785-832-3338 or register as a volunteer online at lawrenceks.org.

• This week’s How to Help column is a little shorter than usual, but expect to see some brand-new volunteer needs in next Monday’s newspaper — just in time for those New Year’s resolutions to get more involved and give back to your community in new ways. As always, contact the United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center for questions about available volunteer opportunities and how best to find something that fits your interests and skills. Call 785-865-5030 or email volunteer@rhvc.org anytime.
