How To Help: Help needed for Christmas dinner

The Free Lawrence Community Christmas Day Dinner is in need of volunteers to help prepare, serve and deliver meals. The meal will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Christmas Day at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St., and anyone is welcome to attend. Volunteers are asked to come to the church anytime between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m., and there is no need to sign up. Additionally, baked pies are needed Christmas morning. The Willow Domestic Violence Center is currently looking for a skilled volunteer to help completely revise its website, willowdvcenter.org. If you have the expertise to implement this project as well as the time to devote, please contact Aimee Eickmann, Director of Community Engagement, at aeickmann@willowdvcenter.org. Independence Inc. is seeking a volunteer who can assist a gentleman with a traumatic brain injury in learning to play the guitar for personal enjoyment. This gentleman has taken guitar lessons in the past but is still very much a beginner and is looking to learn how to play a few songs. If possible, he is looking for one lesson every other week or so. The volunteer need not have experience giving guitar lessons previously, just the knowledge and patience to teach someone willing to learn. Visiting Nurses is seeking volunteers to provide friendly Barney (canine companion) visits to its hospice patients and other residents at The Windsor Nursing home and/or Brandon Woods Nursing Home once a week. Barney is VNA’s therapeutic companion dog and provides playful companionship to nursing home patients. Volunteer needs to be comfortable with a large dog in social settings. Orientation is provided. Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence is looking for volunteers to serve as scorekeepers for its basketball league. There will be games at five different sites from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday now through the first week of March (with the exception of a few weeks). Volunteers should be 18 or older, and a brief training will be provided on how to operate the scoreboards.
