Stars rock for teachers

Garth Brooks joins Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley, Josh Groban and the pop group fun. in “Teachers Rock” (7 p.m., CBS), a charity concert to support educators. I’m always amused, and a little confused, when I hear the word “rock” used as a verb — particularly on the title of a show mostly headlined by country artists. I guess “Teachers Twang” just didn’t sound right.

In addition to musical performances, viewers will hear personal anecdotes about inspiring teachers from such musicians as Dave Grohl (of the Foo Fighters), Usher, and Adam Levine and James Valentine (of Maroon 5), as well as actors, including Meryl Streep, Viola Davis, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jennifer Garner.

• Mayor Tom Kane (Kelsey Grammer) prepares for his greatest political triumph without the help of his dedicated aides as “Boss” (8 p.m., Starz) enters its second season. The symptoms of Kane’s debilitating illness also increase in frequency and severity, leading to tremors and even hallucinations. Unfortunately for the viewer, Kane’s affliction gives him license to go off on high-flown oratorical tangents.

”Boss” is a serious and often compelling look at big-city politics. And that should be interesting enough. But the drama reaches for the Shakespearean in almost every scene (or at least every scene including Grammer), and the drama’s slightly plodding pace can get wearisome.

• “Strike Back” (9 p.m., Cinemax) enters its second season. Set in the world of counterterrorism, “Strike” stars Philip Winchester (“Crusoe”) and Sullivan Stapleton (“Animal Kingdom”) as handsome tough guys who are proficient in martial arts and catnip to the ladies — often seen here in as much undress as Cinemax allows. It’s safe to say that this series does not reach for the Shakespearean.

So it’s odd that “Strike” becomes the launching pad for new songs from Bob Dylan’s forthcoming album “Tempest,” to be released Sept. 11. This is Dylan’s 50th anniversary as a recording artist and his 35th studio release. Who knew when he wrote “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Masters of War” that he’d be lending his songs to soft-porn ultra-violence?
