One person dead near railroad tracks north of Lawrence

Douglas County sheriff deputies investigate the scene where emergency crews discovered one person dead about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday on railroad tracks north of Lawrence. The person was found about a quarter-mile north of the entrance to Riverfront Park in North Lawrence.

Emergency crews discovered a man’s body about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday near railroad tracks north of Lawrence.

Douglas County Sheriff’s investigators and Union Pacific Railroad officials were trying to determine if the man was struck by a train, said Mark Davis, a Union Pacific spokesman.

The body was found near the tracks about a quarter-mile north of the entrance to Riverfront Park, or North 1800 Road, in North Lawrence.

Lt. Gary Bunting, a sheriff’s patrol supervisor, said officers did not suspect foul play in the man’s death, but they were still investigating.

“At this point we don’t have anything that stands out as that,” he said.

Bunting said he could not yet divulge whether officers thought the man was struck by a train, citing the ongoing investigation.

Investigators as of Tuesday evening had not been able to identify the man, whose body first was discovered by a railroad worker on a passing train, Bunting said. He said the investigation could take a couple of days.

One southbound train was stopped in the area Tuesday morning as sheriff’s officers examined an area near where the body was found, but the tracks reopened later in the morning. A coroner’s investigator is assisting in the investigation.

Davis, the Union Pacific spokesman, said a worker aboard the train called authorities at 7 a.m. when he noticed a body next to the tracks. Davis said at 10:40 a.m. investigators were unsure if a train was involved in the man’s death.

“We are checking all the trains that passed through that area for the last 12 hours,” Davis said.
