Woman charged with striking person with weapon

Douglas County prosecutors Thursday accused a 39-year-old Lawrence woman of using a billy club or blackjack to strike another woman during an incident early Wednesday.

Debbie Marie Merz was arrested early Wednesday morning following a disturbance at a home in the 700 block of Walnut Street, and prosecutors Thursday filed charges of aggravated battery and criminal use of a weapon against her.

Police said officers were called about 1 a.m. Wednesday to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where a woman reported she had been struck twice with a blunt object during an argument with another woman. The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. About two hours later, Merz was arrested at a home in the 2800 block of Alabama Street.

A judge set her bond at $5,000 and ordered Merz to have no contact with witnesses in the case, other than law enforcement officers.
