Lecompton residents elected three City Council members Tuesday.

The unofficial results as of Tuesday night (they have to be confirmed by the county board of canvassers on Monday) show incumbent Jimmy Wilkins in a tie for first place in number of votes at 58. Mary Jane Hoffer, a write-in candidate, also won 58 votes. Loretta Susie Hackathorn, also a write-in, came in third with 42 votes. Jennifer Smith and Christy Mallonee, with 24 votes each, were the two other incumbents and the only other two on the official ballot. Smith and Mallonee both resigned from the council on March 19 amid controversy over what to do with the currently empty Lecompton High School and their treatment by other council members.

Eighty-six votes were cast, which is 22 percent of the population, according to Douglas County Clerk Jamie Shew.

Other write-in candidates and their votes:

• Danny Sanford — 3

• James Goodrick — 2

• Lyle Fergus — 1

• B. Hastert — 1

• Gary L. Bohannan — 1

• Earl Sanford — 1

• Amber Nickel — 1

• Harold Willams — 1.

WELL, AS A CITIZEN AND FORMER COUNCIL MEMBER AND ONE THAT WILL SIGN MY NAME TO WHAT I WRITE, NOT AS THE FORMER COMMENTS. WHEN RUNNING FOR COUNCIL YOU MUST AND I REPEAT MUST LISTEN AND FORGET YOUR OWN DESIRES AND FOLLOW WHAT THE COMMUNITY DESIRES. YOU ARE NOT ON THE COUNCIL TO PURSUE YOUR DESIRES BUT ONLY KEEPING THE CITY IN MIND. IT WOULD BE NICE WHEN A BOARD THAT WAS APPOINTED BY THE MAYOR WOULD HAVE A CHANCE TO FINISH THEIR REPORT BEFORE BEING INTERRUPTED. EVERY TIME SOME ON THIS COUNCIL GETS THEIR "FEELINGS HURT" THEY SAY THEY WANT TO MOVE, WELL WHAT IS STOPPING YOU???. THIS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A GREAT PLACE TO RAISE CHILDREN AND SPEAKING OF THIS BUILDING, CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW MANY CHILDREN HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS BUILDING DURING THE CO-OP, WE SHOULD TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN CONTRIBUTING TO THESE KIDS EDCATION. WE DO HAVE A SEARCH COMMITTEE THAT IS WORKING VERY HARD TO SEE WHAT CAN BE DONE TO UTILIZE THIS BUILDING ONCE AGAIN. DON'T EXPECT THIS TO HAPPEN OVERNIGHT. INSTEAD OF CALLING NAMES AND SUCH WHY DON'T THEY WORK HAND IN HAND. NEVER FORGET, LECOMPTON IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND IF YOU THINK THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TO DO, WHY DON'T YOU COME UP WITH SOME IDEAS AND PUT THEM TO WORK INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING ALL THE TIME. THIS IS AS THEY SAY IN EUROPE, "YOU AMERICANS, ALL YOU DO IS TEAR DOWN BUILDINGS INSTEAD OF PUTTING THEM TO USE". WE DID THAT WITH THE CO-OP AND I FIND GREAT PRIDE IN THIS. YES, WHEN YOU RUN FOR CITY COUNCIL, YOU WILL BE IN "TUSSELS", "ARGUMENTS" AND "DISAGREEMENTS" BUT IF IT IS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THIS COMMUNITY, THAT IS GREAT, REMEMBER ALWAYS PUT THE CITY OF LECOMPTON FIRST, NOT YOUR OWN PERSONAL OPINIONS. NANCY HOWARD

IMO, (and we all have one) every person deserves to be treated with respect, whether or not an elected public official or not. These two council members were not treated with any type of respect at that meeting. I do not expect everyone to be happy with my opinion, but I should not be treated any different than these people would treat other members of the community. Their behavior was inexcusable and I am disgusted to admit that I live in the city of Lecompton.

If you decide to run for office and work as a public servant, you'd darn well better expect that not everyone is going to be happy with what you're doing. In other words, what the heck did they expect? So they got in a snit and quit?

You forgot to mention they resigned also due to their treatment by some of the residents of the City of Lecompton and of Douglas County as well. Make sure to post all facts for the resignations in all of your stories concerning this matter. Not all City Council Members treated the 2 members unfairly, just one in particular. The City of Lecompton has lost 2 community members that were looking out for the welfare of the city. The building in question is costing and will cost the city 100's of thousand of dollars as long as it sits empty. The city of Lecompton is dying and I do not see it recovering anytime in the future. We need a council that sees the big picture and not just one building.
