Of the 30-plus soccer players waiting to hear the name of Lawrence High’s new girls soccer coach, nobody knew who it could possibly be.
The only rumor on the situation was that it might be a woman. They heard right.
On Thursday at the LHS library, the Lions introduced Janna Kepler, an autism behavior consultant at Lawrence High, a former soccer player and a triathlete set to compete in a few days.
Kepler wanted the job last year, but couldn’t apply for it because she was pregnant. With former coach Joe Nemzer, who was hired in February, not returning, the opportunity was there.
“It was just a last-minute thing,” she said. “I think they expected him to be back.”
Kepler’s coaching resume includes three years of swimming at a YMCA in Iowa and various stints in club soccer.
“I love coaching, and I love soccer,” Kepler said. “The two of them together is just great.”
