Lawrence man taken to LMH after crashing vehicle
A 23-year-old Lawrence man was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after he crashed his vehicle and ran from sheriff’s deputies early Saturday morning north of Lawrence, a Douglas County Sheriff’s spokesman said.
Sgt. Steve Lewis said Dustin Barnes, 23, was driving his 1995 Ford Explorer at 1:40 a.m. Saturday north on U.S. Highway 24-59 near the intersection with U.S. Highway 24-40 when he crossed the center line, entered the ditch and struck a culvert. The vehicle came to rest against a chain-link fence. Lewis said Barnes ran from the scene, but deputies later detained him. He was taken to LMH, but his injuries were not life-threatening. Lewis said officers expect to cite Barnes with DUI, transporting an open container, no valid insurance and driving without a valid license. Investigators drew blood from Barnes for an impairment test at the hospital, and officers also suspect use of a cellphone contributed to the accident, Lewis said.
