Landline Kansans more Republican than cell phone users, according to poll

? Hold the phone. A recent SurveyUSA poll shows a political divide among Kansans on whether they use a landline telephone or cell phone.

Home phone respondents are more Republican than cell phone users, SurveyUSA found.

The poll taken earlier this month showed that Republican Mitt Romney leads President Barack Obama, a Democrat, by 14 points among home phone respondents, and only four points among cell-phone respondents, which is an 18-point difference.

Home phone respondents gave Republican Newt Gingrich a 3-point edge over Obama, but among those who do not use a home phone, Obama leads Gingrich by 24 points, which is a 27-point swing.

Of all those surveyed, Obama actually leads Gingrich 45 percent to 40 percent in Kansas and trails Romney 39 percent to 48 percent.

SurveyUSA interviewed 600 Kansas adults from Nov. 18 through Nov. 21. Of the adults, 510 were registered to vote and were asked the substantive questions. This research was conducted multi-mode, according to SurveyUSA.

Survey USA said that respondents who use a home telephone (70 percent of adults, 73 percent of registered voters) were interviewed on their home telephone in the recorded voice of a professional announcer. Respondents who do not use a home telephone (30 percent of adults, 27 percent of registered voters), were shown a questionnaire on their smartphone, laptop, tablet, or other electronic device.
