Lawrence man, 23, pleads no contest in December 2010 Walmart robbery

A 23-year-old Lawrence man pleaded no contest Wednesday to one count of conspiracy in connection with a December robbery last year at Walmart, 3300 Iowa.

Douglas County prosecutors said Christopher Coty Maier entered the plea and was released on his own recognizance. Maier, who had been charged with conspiracy, was the seventh person charged in the Dec. 13, 2010, robbery.

Prosecutors accused Maier and four other defendants with serving as lookouts for the robbery, which Lonnie S. Schaefer, 23, and William O. Patterson, 19, are accused of planning and committing.

Schaefer pleaded no contest in September to robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated arson and distribution of marijuana, Branson said. Prosecutors also accuse Schaefer of throwing a bottle full of flammable liquid onto the roof of McDonald’s, 1309 W. Sixth St., before the robbery in an effort to create a diversion, but the bottle only slightly burned the roof.

Patterson, who was accused of pointing a plastic BB gun at Walmart clerks in the robbery and taking money from a register, has pleaded guilty to several charges and received nearly five years in prison.

District Judge Michael Malone set Maier’s sentencing for Jan. 6.
