Going to Free State graduation? Drink plenty of water and protect yourself from the sun

After about a half dozen people needed medical attention to deal with heat-related issues at Lawrence High School’s commencement ceremony early Sunday afternoon, Jeff Krall says it’ll be even more important for folks across town to take precautions as they migrate to ceremonies at Free State High School.

Drink plenty of water.

Wear a wide-brimmed hat.

Bring an umbrella.

In short: Beware of the sun.

“It’s going to be hot down there, in that bowl,” said Krall, a firefighter/paramedic for Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, who was tending to people affected by heat at Lawrence High’s stadium.

School administrators have been advising spectators to prepare for the heat by bringing water and otherwise shading themselves from the sun’s glare. Restrooms at the stadium will be open, but concessions will not be sold.

At Lawrence High, emergency officials did not need to transport anyone from the stadium because of heat-related medical issues. But Krall said the department might have a second ambulance on duty at Free State, just in case.
