Makeovers, à la Carson Kressley

Every show borrows from others, and “Carson Nation” (9 p.m. Saturday, OWN) is no exception. A combination of Charles Kuralt’s “On the Road” segments, “Extreme Makeover” and his signature “Queer Eye” franchise, “Carson Nation” lets Carson Kressley loose with an Airstream trailer and a mission to assist folks with his singular flair for advice, intervention and wit. And this being Oprah Winfrey’s network, the accent is on uplift and emotional overhaul.

His first stop is in Eureka, Calif., where a bride-to-be is beset with lupus. He also counsels a man whose grief for his recently deceased brother has eclipsed all other facets of his life, including his role as husband and provider. The last challenge includes a visit with a female Coast Guard medic who fears that her long involvement in a military culture has alienated her from her feminine side.

Kressley was clearly the biggest star to emerge from “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” a series that helped transform Bravo from an arts-related network best known for “Inside the Actor’s Studio” to a cable ratings powerhouse with an emphasis on consumerism.

I always thought that a little Carson went a long way and that on “Queer Eye” he was rather nicely balanced by four other talents and personalities. On his own, Kressley’s routine has become a bit too well-worn, and a brash wit that once seemed spontaneous now seems scripted. He’s quick, funny and occasionally warm. But so were many of the stars of “Hollywood Squares.”

Cult choice

A game cast includes emerging postwar stars Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas.
