Coordinating the defense should not be a problem for the Kansas University football team in 2011, as the coaching staff now will feature three coordinators on defense.

Last week, KU football coach Turner Gill promoted assistants Vic Shealy and Buddy Wyatt into defensive coordinator roles to replace outgoing DC, Carl Torbush, who retired from football to fight prostate cancer.

Friday, Gill announced that safeties coach, Robert Wimberly, had been promoted to Pass Coordinator and will assume responsibility for putting together KU’s gameplan against opposing offense’s aerial attacks.

He joins Shealy, KU’s defensive coordinator, and Wyatt, KU’s co-defensive coordinator, as the sixth member of Gill’s staff to have the coordinator title attached to his name. In addition to the three defensive coaches, Chuck Long serves as the team’s offensive coordinator, Reggie Mitchell as the recruiting coordinator and Aaron Stamn as the special teams coordinator.

Staffer, Jeff Love, is the Jayhawks’ video coordinator.

Wimberly, now in his second season at Kansas and third overall as a Gill assistant, is one of the youngest coaches on KU’s staff and, so far, has made a name for himself by heavily recruiting his home state of Florida.

Friday, Gill discussed how Wimberly is much more than just a quality recruiter.

“Robert is a dynamic teacher of the game of football,” Gill said. “He possesses outstanding organizational skills and is a phenomenal recruiter. Robert has a great presence about him and I definitely consider him to be one of the top young coaches in the nation.”

Before joining Gill in Buffalo for the 2009 season, Wimberly worked five seasons at Liberty as the linebackers coach and also spent two seasons on Barry Alvarez’s staff at Wisconsin.
