Sheriff’s officers hope to find driver who might be witness in fatal accident on South Lawrence Trafficway

Douglas County Sheriff’s detectives are asking for the public’s help in locating the driver of a car who might have witnessed a May 31 fatality accident on the South Lawrence Trafficway.

Witnesses have said a car — which might be maroon — was headed east on Kansas Highway 10 near the bridge over Clinton Parkway about 12:15 p.m.

Cindy Burnett, 47, of Lyndon was killed after she was struck by a piece of metal that pierced the windshield of the westbound vehicle she was riding in with her husband. Sheriff’s officers have said Burnett was struck by a piece of scrap metal that fell from a trailer pulled by a westbound pickup truck.

According to the accident report, the driver of the truck, 20-year-old Nicholas Rockhold of Baldwin City, told detectives he had no idea anything fell from his trailer.

In a news release Wednesday afternoon, sheriff’s officials said the metal object also might have struck the maroon car after the object fell from the trailer, but before it hit Burnett.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 785-841-0007.
