Venting propane tank outside Robinson Gym leads to Hazmat incident at KU

Units from Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical Stations 4 and 5 were investigating a venting propane tank outside Robinson Gymnasium at Kansas University. The building was closed while they waited for an emergency repair crew. The tank had been used by a roofing crew.

A large propane tank outside Kansas University’s Robinson Gymnasium vented gas into the air Friday morning, leading to a Hazmat call.

KU Public Safety Office Assistant Chief Chris Keary said a building security officer noticed a strange smell outside the building, 1301 Sunnyside Ave., shortly after 7 a.m. and called authorities.

The tank was believed to belong to a contractor who was working on the building’s roof.

Keary said the smell was particularly noticeable in a courtyard southeast of the building. Keary said there was no immediate danger inside the building, but the building was evacuated as a precaution.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical searched the building and did not find dangerous levels of gas, said Jill Jess, a KU spokeswoman.

Jess said Robinson was operating normally as of late Friday morning.
