Lawrence police are investigating a reported armed robbery that occurred at 3:30 a.m. Thursday at Kwik Shop, 845 Miss.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said the suspect entered the store, approached the clerk and demanded money from the cash register. The suspect displayed a handgun, obtained an undisclosed amount of cash and left the store, heading north on Mississippi Street.

No injuries were reported.

Sarna described the suspect as a black male, 5-feet, 6 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds. He was wearing all black clothing and black shoes, and a white shirt was covering his face.

“It is unknown at this time if a vehicle was involved in the incident,” Sarna said.

Police were attempting to identify the suspect based on surveillance photos.

Sarna said the suspect was considered armed and dangerous and that anyone who sees him should call 911.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call police at 785-832-7650 or Douglas County Crime Stoppers at 785-843-TIPS (8477). Calls to the tips hotline that lead to an arrest could lead to a cash reward of up to $1,000.

When there for gas this week, I paid with a $100 but alas the cashier did not have the change....deduct a gas fill up and there wasn't really that much left.

Clerk had to go to the money machine that served up 4 $10's and advised I had to wait several minutes for the timer to allow any more money requests. The lack of cash available to the clerk is why I swore not to go back there.

Maybe the robbers will catch on, too and ban Kwik Shop. I can see it now....group of youth dressed in the best of baggy blacks, pants low as guns weigh heavy on the elastic waistbands, all carrying signs...shouting slogans....

Don't shop Kwik Shop's Slow cash drop

The regularity of small money armed robbery in Lawrence is alarming.

Most people think and smart enough to not try to use $100 bills at convenience stores.

Crazy_Larry 3 years, 5 months ago

Not smart to buy gum with a hundred dollar bill, but smitty said he filled up the gas tank. Using a hundred dollar bill would be perfectly justified in this case were he driving a large SUV or mini-van, which the majority of people in Kansas drive. (ding, ding, ding)

Where's the new place you'll be buying gas that has oodles and oodles of available change lying around for people to use all the Benjamins they want? That place might want to view everyone with suspicion.

Quik Trips generally carry quite a bit of cash in their drawers, especially during peak hours. If the would be robber was able to time things right, they could potentially get away with quite a bit of cash.

Yeah, don't people know that Kwik Shops don't keep much cash on hand for precisely that reason?

Oh wait.

Well think about it genius! That's the reason for the slow cash drop......To deter robbers! Gee maybe the clerks should keep more money in the drawers just for you and the robbers! Also, maybe you and the robbers can't read! There are signs on the door that tells the max amount in the drawer. So if a would be robber wants to spend several years in jail for 40 bucks well more power to them! And if you are in such an all fired hurry to get somewhere you can pay by credit card at the pump!

viva_la_revolucion 3 years, 5 months ago

Nope sure don't. But if the police can't identify him with the shirt on his face, how do they expect us to?

viva_la_revolucion 3 years, 5 months ago

Yup because "black male, 5-feet, 6 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds. He was wearing all black clothing and black shoes, and a white shirt was covering his face." really narrows it down.

lunacydetector 3 years, 5 months ago

It isn't lost on me that most --if not all--Kwik Shops in Lawrence ban concealed carry. That'd be the first place I'd rob, too.

LadyJ 3 years, 5 months ago

I'm not sure you could identify his face even without the shirt. They need to upgrade their camera.

We need a new state law that states; all armed robbers, burglars, thieves, and all commiting violent crimes are to be considered armed and a clear and imminent threat to the lives of anyone near, in other words they should be shot without hesitation. All the theives carry and use guns now, even for car break-ins and other lower level crimes. Anyone doing that has a gun and will kill you! Really!!!
