January 22, 2011

A Douglas County jury Friday afternoon convicted a 22-year-old Topeka man of robbing a Lawrence convenience store in August 2009.

Jurors deliberated for about eight hours over two days before finding Sedryck Welch guilty of aggravated robbery.

Prosecutors had accused Welch of using a shotgun to rob a clerk on Aug. 3, 2009, at Conoco, 2447 W. Sixth St. Lawrence police had released store surveillance photos of a man with a gun that night. After months of investigation, police arrested Welch in April 2010.

The clerk and two other witnesses who knew Welch in 2009 testified at the trial and said they believed he was the man in the store’s surveillance video.

District Judge Michael Malone is scheduled to sentence Welch at 3 p.m. March 31.

It still amazes me just how racist Mr. Branson's office is. If Mr. Welch had been a young white KU student he would have been offered probation months ago. However, once again he uses his favorite henchman, Mr. McCabria to send yet another young black individual to KDOC. I think that Mr. Branson and Mr. McCabria get lots of pleasure out of cleaning up this "problem" of minorities having the audacity to live in their city.
