Ex-roommate testifies in aggravated robbery trial
A former roommate of a 22-year-old Topeka man accused of robbing a Lawrence convenience store in 2009 testified Wednesday that he believed a sawed-off shotgun in a surveillance photo belonged to the defendant.
But a defense attorney for defendant Sedryck E. Welch said during the trial’s second day that Welch’s former roommate, Nick Marengo, seemed to recall more specific details for jurors than he had at the preliminary hearing several months ago.
Authorities accuse Welch of using the shotgun to rob a clerk on Aug. 3, 2009, at Conoco, 2447 W. Sixth St. Police had released store surveillance photos of a man with a gun that night.
After months of investigation, police arrested Welch, and he was charged with aggravated robbery in April 2010. Marengo said Welch was living in Lawrence in August 2009, but according to jail records, Welch had a Topeka address when he was arrested in 2010.
District Judge Michael Malone told jurors that due to the winter storm the trial is scheduled to resume at 1 p.m. Thursday.
