No injuries in two-alarm fire at Applecroft Apartments

A Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical official said no one was injured at a two-alarm fire at Applecroft Apartments, 1741 W. 19th St., early Christmas morning.

Fire Medical Division Chief Joe Hoelscher said the blaze was reported at 2:11 a.m. Sunday morning, and crews responded at 2:14. Firefighters found occupants exiting the building and smoke showing. The fire was quickly brought under control by about 2:30 a.m., and firefighters worked on ventilating smoke from the building.

Hoelscher said the fire was in the first floor hallway area of building A in the apartment complex. Crews requested a second alarm because of the volume of residents affected, Hoelscher said. One resident had to be moved to a nearby apartment building, but was expected to be able to re-enter the building later Sunday morning, Hoelscher said.

He said the cause of the fire was still under investigation. Initial estimates placed the amount of property damage caused by the fire at around $19,500.
