Swastikas painted on Sen. Pat Roberts’ Wichita office

December 19, 2011

— Police in Wichita are investigating an act of vandalism at the storefront office of U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts.

KSNW-TV reports the Kansas Republican's staff arrived Monday to find red swastikas painted on the front of the office and on a back door.

Police Lt. Joe Schroeder says the FBI is working on the case with Wichita police because it's a federal office.

KSNW reports a similar incident happened at Roberts' office a few months ago.

Senator Roberts really should have thought twice or at least asked someone before he changed the decor like that. Anyone would've told him it wouldn't fly.

beatrice 2 years, 12 months ago

How exactly is calling people "leftist loons" in every other post adding to the conversation on this board?

Alex, I thought you were going to do something to improve the tenor of discussions around here. So far, it is worse. Much worse.

Alex Parker 2 years, 12 months ago

It cuts both ways, as everyone here knows. If all posters can take a second to think about whether or not their comments contribute to reasonable discourse on this site, it will be a more informative, interesting and welcoming place.

To that end, the namecalling that beatrice refers to - and it is not limited or confined to posters of any one political ideology - does hurt the overall atmosphere. There are tons of names used on these boards which bring the level of discussion to playground levels. Let's see if we can have real discussions on here, free of partisan bickering, shaming and name-calling. I think it's possible.

beatrice 2 years, 12 months ago

If the name-calling hurts the overall atmosphere, why is it allowed at all? How many times will you allow people to call others "loons" as you just have done here? I acknowledge that arguments can get heated, but when it is in virtually every post, isn't that going too far? Further, could you please explain how calling the President of the United States of America something like "Big Daddy" on virtually every post by a certain poster adds in any way to the desired civil discourse?

Finally, it is an insult to everyone's intelligence to pretend we can't recognize the writing habits of previously removed posters. Just so you know.

beatrice 2 years, 12 months ago

BAA -- yes, kinda like "zombies." Do away with one, and the other naturally goes away. "Zombies" isn't the cause, but the reaction.

Tell you what. I'll stop using zombie as soon as ... well, we have been down this road already, haven't we?

jafs 2 years, 12 months ago

Really, if you care that much about the atmosphere, you should just stop the name calling yourself, right now.

There's no real justification for continuing it if you feel name calling is a bad thing.

jafs 2 years, 12 months ago

My comment was to bea.

But, it would apply to any who truly wish to improve the atmosphere on here - just stop name calling and insulting behavior.

beatrice 2 years, 12 months ago

It was aimed at me because jafs is clearly better at this online stuff than I am. Thanks for always taking the high road jafs. It is appreciated, and I would be wise if I attempted to do the same.

jafs 2 years, 12 months ago

Sure it's possible.

But, it seems that it would be much more likely to happen if you set higher standards, and enforced them more vigorously.

How about removing all posts with such name calling, and after somebody's had a certain number of posts removed, they're banned?

jonas_opines 2 years, 12 months ago

Yeah. . . stalking.

That's definitely one interpretation, that some of us are following you and the other around, checking your profile for new posts, and following the permalinks to make comments. That is surely a realistic explanation.

The other possibility, undoubtedly less practical or realistic, is that when you post 8-10 times a day, on average, all with the same mindless banter, then wherever it is that we go, there you happen to be.

jonas_opines 2 years, 12 months ago

You seem to have missed the point and fixated on the simplest point of that post.

Personally, I no longer see any point to putting great energy into making an argument that will only be accepted or rejected along partisan lines. When I see people worthy of a thoughtful response, I provide one for them.

jonas_opines 2 years, 12 months ago

Alternatively, I can follow your example with another: I know you are but what am I? Assuming, as appears to be apparent, that such is the level of dialog you strive for.

beatrice 2 years, 12 months ago

But Solomon, I have. Maybe not on that instance, but certainly others. However, it isn't just a matter of playing hall moniter to make a note of every silly item or example of poor behavior. It is recognizing the repeated pattern from a small group of users -- over and over again -- of not contributing a thing but their hate for others. It also happens that these are users who write in ways that remarkably mimic the writing structure and, at times, the exact words used previously by posters who have been removed. Nobody is fooled by who they are. After all, when you add two and two together, you get four. It is just math, after all.

The recognition of this pattern has prompted my use of "zombie." Compared to the non-stop barriage of things from these people at whom this is directed, it seems pretty calm by comparison.

thatonedude 2 years, 12 months ago

Disgusting. I'm a Dem, I have no love for Roberts, but this is wrong and utterly offensive.

ljwhirled 2 years, 12 months ago

It is unfortunate that Mr. Robert's views aren't expressed this way more often. It would help the public to better understand his platform.

Thanks for clarifying your position with such graphic and understandable symbols Mr. Roberts.

Props on using a guerrilla method as well, you'll connect with those youngsters yet!

Stay classy there, disappointed progressives.

I wonder if it was in reaction to the law which allows the

Military given go-ahead to detain US terrorist suspects without trial

Similar to an early nazi law, changing the German system of law.

pace 2 years, 12 months ago

BAA that is the most intelligent statement you have made lately, laying off?

ivalueamerica 2 years, 12 months ago

I seem to understand her comments quite well, perhaps it is a reader issue more than a poster issue, in fact, I am quite sure of it.

Maybe for his partisanship while heading the Senate Intelligence Committee in the run up to the Iraq invasion?

Arrest the vandals, move on with our lives.

yourworstnightmare 2 years, 12 months ago

Were the arms of the swastikas pointing clockwise? If not, maybe some Navajo wanted to give Roberts good luck and medicine.

jonas_opines 2 years, 12 months ago

Or a Buddhist, for that matter.

But somehow. . . I doubt it.

asixbury 2 years, 12 months ago

Why is there such hatred towards people with opposing political views? Is not the adult thing to do is accept other people's opinions as just that, their opinions? How does another person's views affect your life so much that it warrants the hatred spewed back and forth on these forums? There are good and bad aspects of every opinion, view, political party, etc... There is nothing that can be said negative about liberals that could not be attached to republicans as well, and vice-versa. Grow up!

Richard Heckler 2 years, 12 months ago

"Why is there such hatred towards people with opposing political views?" I agree.

Mr Roberts the question has been submitted.

beatrice 2 years, 12 months ago

Yet you are new around here. How is it exactly you remember what was going on around here back in the W years?

Or, more to the point -- prove your accusation. Back up this accusation about calling Palin a bunch of names. Prove it.

I'm just asking why the LJWorld doesn't remove posters who have been previously removed. Does this cut a little too close to the bone for you? And if you only want to talk with people still residing in Kansas, talk to your neighbors.

beatrice 2 years, 12 months ago

Why, I'm not angry at all. I am simply making observations.

Tell you what, if you quit with ALL of the name calling, not just "loons," then I will gladly stop ALL name calling and recognizing the zombies among us as well. I would love to see you contribute to the discussions in a positive manner.

beatrice 2 years, 12 months ago

I'm settled, and a Max Brooks fan. I'm just voicing my opinion, that is all.

==========================================

Personally, I read the stories and comments for a long time before I decided I wanted to comment on a story myself and joined up. So it is not outside the realm of possibility that somebody has been a lurker here for years before deciding to join up and participate.

jonas_opines 2 years, 12 months ago

Not outside of the realm of possibility, but I think we all know that it's not the case, too.

beatrice 2 years, 12 months ago

Again, before you were around here, yet you remember? Interesting.

Of course, you are confusing agitation with questioning. It seems if someone is removed from the company's website for abusive language and instances of racially questionable comments, that that decision would possibly apply to their printed pages as well. I was questioning why it didn't. If you tell Fred Phelps to get off your lawn, for example, do you then turn around and let him in your building? It was along that line of thought.

By the way, what ever you do, don't write that removed person's (non-anonymous user) name in your post. It, like the person himself, will be removed and never be allowed to be seen ever again. Gone for good. Yep, that is what will happen.

Oh, and should anyone accuse me of not staying on topic, swastika's aren't cool.

jonas_opines 2 years, 12 months ago

"Then get upset when other users quickly recognize them and point out this fact."

They appear to now be resorting to flagging those posts for removal, and the ljworld appears to be complying with this. Rather a stretch for the TOS "outing" clause to cover previous newspapers. . .

. . . but I suppose if you can't or won't actually take the steps to make them stay gone, you might as well just keep people from being able to talk about it!
