For people who want to make simple energy improvements to their homes, but don't know how, Westar Energy is offering a three-hour, do-it-yourself home energy audit course.
The class, which is part of the community's Earth Day celebration, will be from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Mass.
The class will cover locating and repairing air leaks, heating and cooling equipment, water heaters, lighting, appliances and air sealing for insulation, windows and doors.
Participants also will get a chance to test their do-it-yourself skills with hands-on displays that teach the basics of how to weather strip and caulk around windows and doors, and to properly use a can of spray foam to seal gaps.
The class cost $20 per household and includes an energy efficiency kit valued at $25. The class is limited to 60 people and participation will earn points toward the community's Take Charge Challenge, which is a competition between Lawrence and Manhattan on which community can save the most energy.
In addition, a presentation will be held at 11:30 a.m. on the Take Charge Challenge followed at noon by information on fair housing laws.
