KU sports fans can help stock local food pantries

Kansas University basketball fans attending “Late Night in the Phog” are asked to help Lawrence food pantries by donating nonperishable food items.

Late Night — set for Oct. 15 at Allen Fieldhouse — marks the beginning of the KU basketball season. As fans enter the building, they will be able to drop off canned or packaged nonperishable food items.

Also, if KU fans bring a food donation to one of the following sporting events, they can attend for $3.

• Soccer — KU vs. Texas A & M., 5 p.m. Friday, Jayhawk Soccer Complex on 19th Street, immediately west of Oliver Hall.

• Volleyball — KU vs. Baylor, 6 p.m. Nov. 17, Horejsi Family Athletics Center.

The food will be donated to the Just Food, which serves as the food bank for Douglas County that each month serves between 1,600 and 2,000 people and distributes more than 10 tons of food.

Items it could use: meats and fish, chili or stews, vegetables and fruit, peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti sauce, fruit juices, oatmeal, crackers, dry or evaporated milk, rice, toilet paper, and cereals.
