Lawrence agencies participating in national Make A Difference Day

Make A Difference Day is a national day of service that was started by USA Weekend magazine in 1992. The Roger Hill Volunteer Center will be participating by coordinating volunteer projects throughout Lawrence on Saturday, Oct. 23. Several agencies will be hosting groups of volunteers in painting projects, outdoor cleanups, and much more. Immediate needs

• Lawrence Community Theatre is in need of volunteers to help with its production of “SHOUT! The Mod Musical,” which continues Thursday through Sunday and Oct. 7-10. Volunteers will help usher guests and work in the refreshments bar for any of the performances. • The Kansas Authors Club needs volunteers for its upcoming 2010 literary convention, Friday through Sunday at the Lawrence Holidome. Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs, including helping authors carry in boxes of their books, helping older members with luggage, laptops, etc., helping staff the registration table, or acting as a general “gofer” for needs that may arise. Help is needed on each of the three days. When not busy, volunteers are welcome to attend a workshop and join the planned Saturday luncheon. • Midnight Farm, a program of Community Living Opportunities, is in need of volunteers to help out with its KU Natural Ties event on Oct. 6. Approximately 10-12 volunteers are needed from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to help with event setup, staff various activities such as hay rides and a petting zoo, and clean up at the event’s end. • The Community Connections Center, host of the Ctran program and vocational training program for Lawrence public schools, is in need of volunteers to help at its Harvest Party from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 7. The event is both a work party and harvest celebration hosted by students. Volunteers with expertise are needed to help build the base of a greenhouse and raised beds for their garden.
