‘Domestic Debris’ exhibit at KU explores everyday junk

That pile of junk in your home might be more than clutter.

An exhibit opening Sept. 26 at the Art and Design Gallery at Kansas University takes a closer look at the stuff of everyday life.

The display of more than 20 images is titled “Domestic Debris.” One image shows party goods, including balloons and tinsel. Another features a porcelain bunny, cleaning supplies and houseplants.

The university says in a news release that Kansas City artist Kati Toivanen created the pieces.

Toivanen is a professor and chair of the art and art history department at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Toivanen says that through the work, she came to “accept, and even embrace, the accumulation of debris in my domestic environment.”
