Emporia police find mother of baby left in trash bin

? Emporia police say they’ve found the mother of a newborn who was left in a trash bin soon after birth.

The baby was found early Friday morning and taken to a hospital. Police Detective Lt. Ed Owens says the baby is a boy who weighs 7 pounds, 10 ounces. Police say the child is in stable condition.

Police also told KVOE-AM of Emporia that the child’s mother is receiving medical attention. Police identified her as 24-year-old Christina N. Devine of Emporia.

Police say she could face charges.

Kansas has a safe haven law that allows parents to drop off babies up to 45 days old at any fire department, medical facility or health department. KVOE reports there doesn’t appear to have been an attempt to drop the baby at a safe haven in this case.
