Man injured in accident with wrong-way driver on K-10 released from hospital

A Kansas City, Mo., man who was injured in a head-on crash Monday night on Kansas Highway 10 near De Soto has been released from Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Refujio Gomez-Ruiz, 41, was injured Monday night when his westbound Ford Windstar minivan was struck by a Buick LeSabre that was headed the wrong way, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s initial report.

Troopers identified the wrong-way driver as 76-year-old Dora Henning of De Soto. She died at the scene of the crash just west of De Soto. Authorities have said Henning had been driving the wrong way for several miles when she came over a hill and struck Gomez-Ruiz’s van. Both drivers wore their seat belts, according to the highway patrol.

That accident happened minutes after another one near Eudora in which Henning forced another car off the road. The other driver in that accident did not have to be taken to the hospital.

Shannon Peyton, a medical center spokeswoman, said Thursday morning that Gomez-Ruiz had been released.

Troopers are still finishing the complete accident report, which will have more details about the crash.
