Light rail advocate Clay Chastain to run for KC mayor

November 29, 2010

— A Virginia man who helped push a successful light rail ballot issue in Kansas City in 2006 has announced he plans to run for the city's mayoral post next year.

Clay Chastain says he has been asked by petition signers to come back to help improve the city's image and morale.

Though local voters passed the light rail measure in 2006, the City Council later scrapped it because members said the plan had too many flaws.

KMBC reports Chastain promises to move back to Kansas City if he's elected. He also vows to push for a change in the city's residency requirements so that candidates need only to live there upon taking office.

He says he plans to run as a write-in candidate in the spring.
