Lawrence school administrators face five unpaid furlough days next year
Lawrence school district administrators will be on unpaid furlough for five days next school year as part of $100,000 in salary reductions.
The cuts affect 55 district and school administrators from Superintendent Rick Doll on down, chief operations officer Frank Harwood said Monday.
“It doesn’t impact the work that needs to get done, just the amount of time to do it,” Harwood said.
It equates to a 2 percent pay cut. The furlough days will come when school is out of session for holidays, Nov. 24 and Dec. 27 to Dec. 30.
The district also announced Monday that 110 classified employees — such as clerical staff, maintenance workers and custodians –will be on furlough on Dec. 27, which is a 0.4 of 1 percent pay cut. During the other four days that administrators will be on furlough, classified staff members can use vacation or business leave to get paid.
All schools and district headquarters, 110 McDonald Drive, will be closed those days.
Some classified staff members will be able to work those days to perform essential services, such as maintenance repair in a school or to help run the district’s payroll.
Harwood said the furloughs could disrupt the transition for new families and students transferring into the district between semesters. It also could cause delays in getting records forwarded if students transfer out of the district.
Due to state budget reductions, board members in March approved $4.6 million in cuts for next school year.
The district also will save money in administration by not filling certain open positions, Harwood said. Other changes will be announced later.
