CW hits new low with ‘High Society’

“High Society” (8:30 p.m., CW) seems incomprehensible at first and goes downhill from there. It slowly comes into focus as our eyes adjust to the central character, Tinsley Mortimer, a recently divorced blonde given to unpacking boxes in 6-inch Prada heels and profound observations like, “Not everything is as perfect as it seems.”

She’s not to be confused with her sister, Dabney Mercer, equally blond. Dabney is between apartments and shares a hotel suite with Jules Kirby, not quite as blond, a rather harsh young woman who freely admits to her bigoted inclinations and racist language.

Her audacious intolerance may be the most memorable aspect of this “Jersey Shore” meets “Town & Country” hybrid. Maybe bigotry is the new nudity, the attention-getting hook CW is looking for, a shortcut to Snookiedom.

At first I thought “High Society” was a scripted, “acted” series masquerading as a documentary. It seemed that contrived.

Unfamiliar with the gossip pages, I thought this whole mess was a concocted cross between “Gossip Girl” and “The Office.” But apparently, these creatures and their press clippings are genuine. They only seemed fake to me. And that, I guess, is some kind of art.
