An 18-year-old man was arrested early Sunday morning after firing shots at a vehicle in the 2300 block of Iowa Street.

According to a media release from Lawrence Police Capt. Paul Fellers, an officer near the intersection of 23rd and Iowa streets heard several gun shots about 2:20 a.m.

Officers in the area engaged in a foot pursuit of an individual who fit the description of a person seen leaving the area where the shots had been fired. Officers located the individual behind Hobby Lobby, 1801 West 23rd Street. The 18-year-old Kansas City, Kan., suspect was arrested without incident. Officers recovered a handgun in the area the man was located.

After interviewing several people, the suspect was booked into the Douglas County Jail. He was charged with aggravated assault, criminal use of a weapon, criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle, defacing identification marks of a firearm, possession of marijuana and obstruction.

A vehicle was observed leaving the area and later located in the 2200 block of West 26th Street.

Officers determined the vehicle had been struck by the gunfire. Of the vehicle's three occupants, one had fled the scene and was not located. The two remaining occupants, both Lawrence residents, were not injured.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information relating to the incident is asked to call the Lawrence Police Department at 785-832-7509 or the CrimeStoppers hotline at 785-843-TIPS.

troll,

People who smoke pot are generally harmless. Unlike alcohol, which stimulates aggression, pot has a sedative effect, making potheads sleepy and giggly.

It is well known that drinking often causes fights - read the paper to see the reports.

My guess is that this guy is a dealer, part of the criminal network that surrounds any illegal activity, and that is most responsible for the negative consequences of drug use (remember Prohibition?).

People who smoke pot are generally harmless....based on what evidence?

jafs 4 years, 8 months ago

Based on the known effects of marijuana - a sedative effect.

Based on all of the people I've known who smoked pot.

Based on the many reports of alcohol-related fighting/violence, and the lack of similar reports regarding marijuana - when was the last time you read of a couple of potheads getting into a fight?

Based on my own personal experience when I was much younger smoking pot - it never made me aggressive.

prohibition makes marijuana a black market criminal activity. you remove the prohibition and you remove this element.

Trol-

Have you ever smoked pot? Jafs has a great point. Back in the day, I was a faithful pot smoker and pot does have a sedative effect and make a person relax, unlike alcohol which can make a person want to be superman (and their really not). unless pot is laced with something, pot is waaaaay more safe to do than alcohol.

Just because this person had pot on him does not mean he shot the gun because he may have been high. He did it because thats his personality (for one reason or another).

Stuart Evans 4 years, 8 months ago

additionally, more people are using/carrying marijuana than you can really imagine (more than 15 million regular users). Among a group of this size, you are going to have a percentage who don't fit the passive, relaxed, happy smoker.

Oh please, anyone who has any sense at all knows that marijuana isn't a violence inducing (or activity inducing) drug. Don't feed the trolls, guys. They really aren't worth it.

The first thing that should be done is shoot the shooter in the kneecaps with his own gun. Then tell 'notyoureverydauaveragetrol" to stop repeating her self.

Pot is guilty of being a "gateway drug". It's hard to blame anything on pot because people who are using are also using something else as well. Most addicts keep pot around because they will need to get some sleep eventually, and smokin' a joint makes it so much easier to sleep...

classclown 4 years, 8 months ago

Frankly I'm surprised the pot is even able to find time to make a post elsewhere on this site. Such as in here. The pot should get out of the house once in a while.

Not a word about the shots fired in the area of 15th and Lawrence Ave? Or is this another case of misdirection by the LPD.

"defacing identification marks of a firearm" WOW.....that will land him in the federal slammer for 10 years w/o parole.

notjust, yep, doesn't look like them gun owners would ever hurt a fly.

Oh, that is right, when one person starts firing away at people it isn't a reflection on all gun owners, but when a person possessing marijuana fires at someone it is a reflection on all pot smokers. Got it.

On a serious note, just think of the officers giving chase to an armed suspect at night as described in the report -- my hat is off to them for their bravery.

SirReal 4 years, 8 months ago

This has nothing to do with pot smokers get off it people, what this has to do with is the trend of Wyandotte trash that has come to hang out and live in Lawrence, treating it like a ghetto of Wyandotte.

jafs 4 years, 8 months ago

To really evaluate whether pot is a "gateway" drug, one would have to find data on not only how many people currently using other drugs started with pot, but also how many people smoke pot and don't move on to other drugs.

Also, imho, all drugs should be legal.

Remember Prohibition? During that time, gangs and violence surrounded the production/consumption of alcohol. When alcohol was made legal, that disappeared. And, of course, the government got a new revenue source from taxing it.

Seems like the obvious thing to do with drugs as well.

beatrice 4 years, 8 months ago

I think bb guns are the gateway weapon for criminals who later use bigger guns.

Graczyk 4 years, 8 months ago

Do you know what the true gateway drug is? Curiosity.

"It's these cars! He hates these cars!"

Now I see the thread has become about the Pot found on the guy. Probably why a kid from KC would be in Lawrence in the first place. (My friends, Lawrence is a major pot hub. You can accept that, or keep your head in the sand.)

Have you ever been to sports event or concert, and somebody starts trouble or a fight? Are they on Marijuana? or Alcohol? Hmm?

I think the kid fired shots because he's a loser/gangster/wannabe. I bet he tried to cheat the other guys in the car (pinching their bags), and they dumped the fool. Then (because he's convinced he's hardcore) he fires shots at his own homeboys, perhaps?

balishag,

Again, to make a meaningful evaluation, one would also have to find out how many people use marijuana and don't go on to harder drugs.

And, since I think all drugs should be legal, it doesn't really matter.

jafs 4 years, 8 months ago

In other words, the important percentage to learn would be :

What percentage of those who smoke marijuana go on to harder drugs?

Not:

What percentage of those on harder drugs started with marijuana?

If the first percentage is relatively low, then it's clearly not true that marijuana use often leads to harder drug use.

Stuart Evans 4 years, 8 months ago

balishag (anonymous) says… Very few go from zero drug use to cocaine, meth, or heroine. I guarantee you 99% of drug users start from the initial marijuana usage and go up to heavier drugs. Thus, marijuana is a gateway drug and should be illegal.

This post is laden with ignorance. First of all, you can't guarantee anything about your percentages. What's to guarantee? I guarantee that 100% of cocaine, meth or heroin users started on alcohol and/or cigarettes. Both of which are highly addictive, very deadly, and completely legal.

The only gateway effect that marijuana has, is that the government has forced consumers into dealing with the black market. There are no agents within marijuana that make a person crave the very different effects of cocaine, meth or heroin.

If marijuana causes people to go on to those "heavier/scarier" drugs, why wouldn't there be an equal number of cocaine users as marijuana users? in fact, of the 15million people who smoke marijuana regularly, only a small percentage have ever used the big 3, and an even smaller percentage do so on a regular basis.

This guy is arrested for shooting his gun at a car and this thread is about the little bit of weed he had? Are you all serious? I guess the NRA has suceeded in taking gun issues off the discussion table.
