One arrested after shots fired at car

An 18-year-old man was arrested early Sunday morning after firing shots at a vehicle in the 2300 block of Iowa Street.

According to a media release from Lawrence Police Capt. Paul Fellers, an officer near the intersection of 23rd and Iowa streets heard several gun shots about 2:20 a.m.

Officers in the area engaged in a foot pursuit of an individual who fit the description of a person seen leaving the area where the shots had been fired. Officers located the individual behind Hobby Lobby, 1801 West 23rd Street. The 18-year-old Kansas City, Kan., suspect was arrested without incident. Officers recovered a handgun in the area the man was located.

After interviewing several people, the suspect was booked into the Douglas County Jail. He was charged with aggravated assault, criminal use of a weapon, criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle, defacing identification marks of a firearm, possession of marijuana and obstruction.

A vehicle was observed leaving the area and later located in the 2200 block of West 26th Street.

Officers determined the vehicle had been struck by the gunfire. Of the vehicle’s three occupants, one had fled the scene and was not located. The two remaining occupants, both Lawrence residents, were not injured.
