Charges filed in battery incident

Douglas County prosecutors on Monday charged a 35-year-old Lawrence man with aggravated battery in connection with a Sunday incident that sent another man to the hospital.

A judge set Anthony J. Sanchez-Day’s bond at $20,000.

Lawrence police arrested Sanchez-Day about 8:30 a.m. in the 2100 block of Iowa Street after they investigated an incident hours earlier in the 2500 block of Redbud Lane.

A 24-year-old Lawrence man said he had been battered in the parking lot by several men. The man had facial injuries. He was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later treated and released.

Police said a concealed knife was discovered in Sanchez-Day’s possession. If convicted of the aggravated battery charge, he would face anywhere from three to 14 years in prison.

His next court appearance is scheduled for June 17. As of Monday afternoon, police had not made any additional arrests.
